Class History: One of Starfleet's most versatile vessels, the Kelvin Class is a product of a newer, more military Starfleet. With the number of threats facing the Federation, coupled with the desire to continue multi-mission diplomatic and exploratory duties, these ships are more than capable of self defense. They are, however, designed primarily with exploration and scientific endeavors in mind, being more than capable of The Kelvin Class starship project was instituted shortly before the Sovereign Class, as a variant sister class - similar to the Galaxy and Nebula classes. She utilizes the most successful elements of the Galaxy, Sovereign, and Miranda Classes. Capable of warp speed in excess of warp 9, she is one of Starfleet's fastest ships.

The Kelvin Class USS Aires entered service in 2379, under the Command of Captain Sanford Armstrong. The ships recently transferred hands to newly promoted Captain Vikki Smythe, former Executive Officer of both the USS Florida and the USS Aires - both under Armstrong's Command.
